I stopped in Woodcliff to finally drain and winterize last Friday. I ran into Steve who informed me that all beach access has been closed. The road to the beach has collapsed due to drain pipe failure. Town of Riverhead highway department has erected a steel barricade preventing vehicles from going any further than the last entrance to Woodcliff. They have also boarded and closed the stairway. We now have zero beach access. I was told that the town has no intention of repairing this road due to budget cuts. We ALL need to contact the local politicians and push them to restore our beach access. Here is an email link to Riverhead officials;www.riverheadli.com/town-officials.htmlPhone #'s are;Supervisor Philip J. Cardinale- (631) 727-3200 ext. 251 George Woodson - Superintendent of Highway - Ext. 228 Mark Gajowski - Deputy Superintendent - Ext. 351 Sue Beal - Sr. Administrative Asst. - Ext. 389 Donna Testa - Account Clerk Typist - Ext. 388

Thank you for posting this. We haven't been out so this is quite a shock... I hope people check the website regularly. Why would they close the staircase as well? I'll write a letter and call. Thanks again.

Update: I spoke with the town highway department today. They informed me that they will fix the road. The problem is that it won't be done for the summer unless we stay on them. The project will be put out for bid as soon as the $$ has been approved by the board. Please contact the supervisor and councilmen/woman to get the spending for this project approved.
Also, please let us know if you have contacted the town. Thanks,

When you contact these town politicians, the first thing they want to know is if you're registered to vote in riverhead. When you tell them no, they just schrug you off. If you want some action out of them think about getting people to change thier voter registration to riverhead, which you are entitled to do.

Hi Guys! When I spoke to Steve Morrow he mentioned that the stairs are closed per Ben for the winter so that he doesn't have to worry about other people using them while the road is out (probably an insurance precaution). It sounded like the stairs WILL be open by the summer, regardless of the condition of the road. I'll try to go out there this weekend and see if I can verify this. He also gave me the number of the town attorney if you didn't post it yet...631-727-3200

They can block off vehicles from entrance, but the stairway is completely stable. (I think.) As far as I know, they can't block off the staircase.

Can we still put boats and stuff in at other beaches? Like Edwards Ave.

I just got off the phone with Supervisor Cardinale. Very nice man! Unfortunately our road situation is not looking good for the coming year. The Town of Riverhead does not have the $$(in the area of 800k) to repair the road. He told me that the town is applying for grants for the project since the board does not currently have the $$. Please folks, let's all call and put some pressure on the town board to fund the project. Below is a link to the town web site. There you can easily email the elected officails. Please update us if you hear anything.

BAD NEWS!!!!!!!! I spoke to Supervisor Cardinale's office today. The beach rode and parking will not be repaired in the near future. I was told that they are applying for federal funding (which takes months) if that doesn't work they will then have to find another way to to come up with the $$ to fix the road. Definetly won't be done for this summer.
