Grant Application For Oakleigh Avenue Rehabilitation
RIVERHEAD, June 18, 2009 — Supervisor Phil Cardinale has announced
that the Town of Riverhead has applied for a grant from the Suffolk County
Water Quality Protection and Restoration Program in the amount of
$274,802 to repair and remediate the drainage and roadway systems of
Oakleigh Avenue in Baiting Hollow. The Suffolk County Water Quality
Protection and Restoration Committee has agreed to recommend to the
Suffolk County Legislature the awarding of the grant to the Town.
“We anticipate this grant will be approved by the Suffolk County
Legislature within the next two months and will enable us to begin the
work of restoring Oakleigh Avenue,” stated Cardinale. “The plan has been
submitted for a DEC approval. The Town has been forced to close Oakleigh
Avenue to vehicle and pedestrian traffic due to the dangerous conditions
which developed from the collapse of the drainage system at that location.”
Cardinale continued, “The Town is working hard to secure necessary
funding to correct this safety problem as quickly as possible. I thank the
Town Attorney’s Office and the Town Engineering Department for their
efforts to re-open this road to access Long Island Sound for recreation and
emergency response purposes.”
The total cost of remediation is estimated at $690,800.The County
funding will address drainage and remediation problems. Additional funding
is being sought for a vehicle turnaround, pedestrian access and plantings.
