I spoke with the attorney who is handling this for the town. They are soliciting bids as we speak to have the issue corrected but do not have a time frame. He indicated that there is a large sinkhole that puts the entire area of the beach at risk of collapse.
He did mention that there is nothing stopping Mr. Karlin from building an alternate access point (stairs) to the beach from inside the park. I am not sure if anyone has raised this with him or his attorney, but it seems to be the fastest way to restore a walkway to the beach.

Installing a staircase requires DEC approval which takes months. There is no reason why Town of Riverhead can't fill the holes temporarily.

So we can't use the stairs this summer? What's the point of staying there if we can't use the staircase?
